BERKELEY -
Former Cal post player Jamal Sampson waited until the second round for his name to be called when he was taken by the Utah Jazz with the 47th overall pick of the 2002 NBA Draft. Sampson was then dealt to the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for Rashard Griffith.
The 6-11, 235-pound Sampson becomes the eighth Cal player in the last nine years to be drafted.
Sampson played one season with the Bears before declaring for the draft. As a freshman, he averaged 6.4 points and 6.5 rebounds while blocking a team-high 54 shots. His best game was a 15-point, 17-rebounds, 5-block performance vs. Washington Jan. 17. At the end of the year, Sampson was voted to the Pac-10 All-Freshman squad.
