Cal Men's Water Polo Announces Coaching Staff Changes

July 18, 2003

BERKELEY, CA - Boyd Lachance has been promoted to associate head coach, and former Cal standout, Gavin Arroyo, has been named assistant men's water polo coach at the University of California, head coach Kirk Everist announced today.

"I feel very fortunate to have both Boyd and Gavin at Cal," said Everist, who was teammates with Arroyo on the United States' 1996 Olympic team. "Boyd has been invaluable to our program and Gavin will bring a wealth of experience to the mix. Both have an intensity, desire and enthusiasm that will drive our team to succeed in the future."

Lachance, beginning his second year with the Bears, was instrumental in Cal finishing 20-7, winning the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament and advancing to the NCAA title game in 2002. He came to Berkeley after an outstanding collegiate water polo career at Pacific in the early '90s and coaching stints with several club teams in the East Bay, as well as with Campolindo High School and Diablo Valley College.

Arroyo, a native of Orange, Calif., joins the Bears' coaching staff after a successful national and international water polo career. A member of the 1996 and 2000 USA Olympic water polo teams, Arroyo has also spent the past seven years playing professionally in Spain for Barceloneta and Barcelona, as well as in Greece for Olympiakos and Vouliagmeni.

A two-time All-American at Cal, Arroyo graduated in 1994 with a degree in political science. He helped lead the Bears to the 1990, 1991 and 1992 NCAA titles and was a member of the United States' World Cup gold medal winning squad in 1997.
