WHAT'S ON TAP: The California women's lacrosse team is in search of another big win over a ranked opponent as they take on No. 13 Northwestern Sunday April 11, at Memorial Stadium. The Bears previously defeated No. 9 Ohio State and took No. 17 Notre Dame and No. 19 Stanford to overtime.
A LOOK AT THE BEARS: Cal enters the week looking for redemption after a tough overtime loss to No. 19 Stanford on April 2. The Bears should be well resting and ready to go as they have nine days to prepare for the Wildcats.
CAVALLO'S EMERGENCE: Laura Cavallo has taken advantage of her opportunities in 2004, tallying 21 points and creating 29 shot attempts in limited playing time. The freshman has only started four games for Coach Jill Malko this season, but has already scored 14 and dished out seven assists. She is also among the team leaders in shooting percentage (.482). Her stellar play has increased her time on the field as of late, starting three of the last six games after starting just once in the first six.
ASSISTANCE GRANTED: You'll be hard pressed to find a player as selfless as Colleen O'Mara, who continues to get her teammates involved whenever she can. O'Mara, who paced the Bears with a school record 27 assists last season in 17 games, has already surpassed that effort in just 12 games in 2004. The senior captain leads the team again with 45 points, including 30 passes leading to scores. She currently holds the school record for career assists (72) and assists in a single season (30).
THE BIG THREE: Molly Brady, Julianne Wu and Colleen O'Mara have been steady performers for Malko in their careers. The trio made their mark in the Cal record books and have a chance to graduate from Berkeley ranked 1, 2, 3, in each of the major categories.
Brady sits just three goals shy of sixth place all-time for goals in a season. The record for goals in a season is held by Sarah Wheatley, who registered 49 in 1999. Brady has placed the ball pass the goalkeeper 29 times this season. The junior has also moved into fourth place all - time in career goals with 80.
Wu is third all-time in goals (101) and points (139). She is also fourth in assists with 38. The senior is in the midst of another solid season having already scored 22 goals and passed out six assists.
O'Mara, over the weeklong NY trip (March 21-28), set a new team record for career assists with 69. She added three more against Stanford last Friday (April 2), giving her a grand total of 72. The old mark of 56 was set by Halsey Monger ('99-'02). O'Mara is also just 14 points away from setting a new Cal points record with four regular season games remaining, plus post season play. She currently has accumulated 151 points in her career.
BEAR SUBS CONTRIBUTING: Sunne Smith, Jocelyn Paul, Kathryn Lindler and Laura Cavallo have all contributed off Coach Malko's bench this season, igniting rallies and doing the "dirty work" for the Bears. Smith in limited action is second on the team in draw controls, while Paul has scooped 12 groundballs and five draw controls. Lindler has played well enough as a sub to earn starters minutes recovering 18 groundballs and earning eight starts. Cavallo has been the offensive sparkplug off the bench for Malko accumulating 21 points as a freshman.
