RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - For the first time in Cal women's crew history, the Golden Bears won the Pac-10 team title. The Bears won three out of four races on the day to take the team title, snapping Washington's 11-year grasp on the title. The Cal women won the varsity eight, second varsity eight and novice eight grand finals. With their wins, the varsity eight and second varsity eight remained undefeated on the year, heading into the NCAA's in two weeks.
In the varsity eight race, the top seeded Bears took the early lead over Washington and Stanford. USC made its move after at the 1000-meter mark to take over third place, but neither Washington nor USC was able to catch Cal at the finish. Defending champion Stanford finished fourth.
The second varsity eight got out to great start, putting distance between it and its competitors in the early part of the race. Washington State made its move in the last 500 meters to try to take over the top spot, but was not able to catch the Bears in the end.
The novice eight captured the title with its win over Washington. In a dual race earlier in the season, Washington beat the Bears by almost 20 seconds, but the Bears put that race behind them and finished three seconds ahead of the Huskies to take the win.
The Bears finished second behind Washington in the varsity four grand final. Defending champion Cal got out to a good start, but trailed the Huskies by second and a half after 500 meters. The Huskies continued to build on their lead over the final 1500 meters, finishing eight seconds ahead of Cal and the rest of the field. Oregon State finished two seconds behind Cal to take the bronze medal.
