Coughlin Makes Her First Olympics

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Golden Bear alumni Natalie Coughlin and Haley Cope will represent the United States in the women's 100-meter backstroke in Athens this summer. Coughlin earned her first trip to the Olympics tonight with her 59.85 first-place finish in the 100-meter backstroke at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Cope came in second to secure the other spot in the event with a 1:01.24 time.

Junior Lauren Medina will miss the finals for the 200-meter freestyle after finishing 16th in the semi-final this evening with a time of 2:04.50.

Alum Staciana Stitts finished fourth in the women's 100-meter breaststroke finals. Only the top two finishers in an event make the Olympic team.

NBC will broadcast taped coverage of the U.S. Swimming Olympic Trials tonight from 8-9 p.m.
