U.S. Olympian and former California All-American Natalie Coughlin qualified for the U.S. World Championship Team by winning the 100-meter backstroke at the World Championship Trials on Saturday at the IU Natatorium. Coughlin, competing for California Aquatics, swam a 1:01.08. The Olympic gold medalist holds the world record in the 100 back at 59.58.
Cal junior Helen Silver (California Aquatics) also swam the 100 back, placing 25th with a time of 1:05.06 in the preliminary.
In the 200-meter freestyle, Cal senior Lauren Medina won the consolation heat in 2:01.55 to place ninth overall and junior Ashley Chandler was 10th (2:01.66) in the 200 free. Both will likely be picked to the U.S. World University Games Team. Cal sophomore Erin Reilly was 29th (2:04.14) and freshman Emily Silver was 55th (2:05.76) in the 200 free. All four are competing for California Aquatics.
On the men's side, Cal freshman John Foster (Irvine Novaquatics) placed third (1:52.45) in the C Final of the 200 free for 19th overall. Senior John Dorr, swimming unattached, was 34th (1:53.87) in the 200 free.
Cal sophomore Patrick O'Neil (Roseburg Swim Team) was second in the C Final and 19th overall (2:04.07) in the 200 butterfly.
Day three of the World Championship Trials begins on Sunday with the women's 100-meter breaststroke.
