BERKELEY - Seven Golden Bears, plus head coach Teri McKeever, will compete intnernationally this summer at both the World Championships and the World University Games.
Recent graduate Natalie Coughlin, sophomore-to-be Emily Silver and incoming freshman Jessica Hardy all qualified for the U.S. team for World Championships July 17-31 in Montreal. McKeever, who was an assistant for the U.S. Olympic team last summer in Athens, will join the squad as an assistant coach.
In addition, four Bears - Ashley Chandler, Lauren Medina, Sherry Tsai and incoming recruit Lauren Rogers - have qualified for the World University Games Aug. 11-21 in Izmir, Turkey.
All of the swimmers, except Tsai, who will represent her native Hong Kong, earned their invitations based on their results at the recent U.S. World Championships Trials in Indianapolis.
Silver, a product of Bainbridge Island, Wash., who finished sixth in the 100-meter freestyle at the trials, and Coughlin, who won the race, both qualified to swim the 4x100-meter freestyle. Coughlin, who captured five medals in Athens last year, also qualified to swim the individual 100 free and the 100 backstroke. She won the latter event at the trials.
Hardy, who hails from Long Beach, will compete in the 100 breaststroke after placing second in the event at the trials.
Medina, from West Covina, qualified to swim the 200-meter freestyle and the 4x200-meter freestyle. Chandler also qualified to swim the 4x200 free, as well as the 400 free. The product of Chandler, Ariz., took sixth place in the 400 free. Medina and Chandler finished ninth and 10th, respectively, in the 200 free.
