BERKELEY -
California's Zsuzsanna Fodor has been named the 2006 Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Year, announced Monday in a vote by the Conference coaches.
Fodor, who also earned Pac-10 first-team honors and is currently ranked third in the Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings, recently won the singles title at the Pac-10 Championships, defeating USC's Amanda Fink in straight sets, 7-6 (2), 6-3. A junior from Budapest, Hungary, Fodor posted a 33-13 overall singles record and is 15-7 in dual-match play.
"This is a great honor and it is well deserved," said head coach Jan Brogan. "This is the second time in program history we have had someone win the esteemed title. Suzi has worked hard all year to improve elements of her game to accomplish such a feat. She is one of the most coachable players I have ever had the pleasure of working with."
Also earning honors for the Golden Bears is sophomore Suzi Babos. Babos, a native of Sopron, Hungary, was named to the All-Pac-10 second team. Babos currently holds a No. 27 singles ranking and has tallied a 25-12 overall singles record. Babos is also ranked eighth in the nation in doubles play with Fodor. The duo has amassed an 18-8 overall record.
The 11th-ranked Bears gear up for the NCAA Tournament this week, as they host Western Michigan in an NCAA Regional on Friday at Hellman Tennis Center. This marks the 25th-consecutive tournament bid for Cal, which earned a No. 10 seed.
This marks just the second Pac-10 Player of the Year honor for California, as Raquel Kops-Jones won the award in 2004.
