MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA -
Cal senior Elsie Windes, as a member of the USA National Team, is a world champion, along with former Golden Bear standouts Heather Petri and Ericka Lorenz, as Team USA defeated host Australia, 6-5, Saturday in the finals of the 2007 World Championship at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Center. Windes played a little more than 12 minutes in the gold medal match.
The United States went undefeated during the World Championship, winning all six of its matches including three preliminary contests, the quarterfinals (10-6 over Spain), the semifinals (10-9 in overtime over Hungary) and tonight's gold medal match. This was Windes' first World Championship appearance. In the opening match of the World Championship, she notched a goal in the United State's 9-7 victory over The Netherlands.
Windes, a three-time All-American and Cal's lone senior, will now rejoin the No. 4-ranked Bears in their quest for an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2007. She will play for Cal in its next home match, Saturday, Apr. 7 against No. 11 Arizona State at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Windes has scored 16 goals in 11 matches this season, and has 140 goals in her college career.
