Postseason Accolades Begin to Roll In

May 8, 2007

BERKELEY - Captain Chase Brogan has been named the Muscle Milk California Student-Athlete of the Week and head coach Jack Clark has been tabbed the Daily Cal Top Coach of the Spring, two more honors awarded in wake of the Golden Bears' championship rugby season, which culminated with Saturday's 37-7 national title victory over BYU.

Brogan, a senior who captained the Bears to their fourth consecutive national title, joins student-athletes from 11 of Cal's 27 varsity sports as a recipient of his award. Clark received his award on the eve of his 19th championship as head coach. His career coaching record at Cal now stands at 416-65-5 (.856). Women's basketball coach Joanne Boyle was the honorable mention.

The individual honors for the rugby team recognize some of the achievements among the team-wide accomplishments during the 2007 season. The Bears swept all collegiate competition, including the British Columbia Thunderbirds for their eighth "World Cup" in the last 11 years, and lost their only match when they fell six points short to the 2006 Rugby Super League champions, OMBAC. Cal beat its postseason opponents by the combined score of 166-10 en route to its 23rd national championship. Sophomore Colin Hawley was honored as Most Valuable Player of the championships for his performance in the weekend's semifinal and final.
