Former AD Dave Maggard Elected to NACDA Hall of Fame

April 27, 2010

BERKELEY - Dave Maggard, who served as director of athletics at Cal from 1972-91, has been named one of 12 inductees into the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Hall of Fame. Maggard and the other honorees will be enshrined during ceremonies on June 23 at the Directors' Cup luncheon during NACDA's annual convention in Anaheim, Calif.

One of the greatest track & field athletes in Cal history who held the school shot put record for over 19 years, Maggard devoted 22 years of his life to Cal as a student-athlete, coach and administrator. He set the then-school record in the shot put with a throw of 59-8.75 while taking fourth at the NCAA meet in 1962. Maggard went on to win the U.S. Olympic Trials in 1968 with what was then the fifth -longest throw in history (67-4.50) and placed fifth at the Mexico City Olympics despite competing with a virus.

Maggard returned to campus to serve as a Cal assistant track coach in 1969 and assumed the head coaching job in 1970. As a rookie head coach, he guided the Bears to the NCAA track & field title in 1970.

Maggard moved into administration in 1972 as director of men's athletics and served in that capacity until 1991. During his tenure, he helped revitalize the department, overseeing a football program that earned a pair bowl berths and a men's basketball program that reached the postseason four times (three NITs, one NCAA) after a period of 25 years between playoff appearances. Overall, Golden Bear teams collected 22 national championships in six different sports while he was AD. Maggard was inducted into the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996.

Maggard later worked as the director of athletics at Miami in Florida from 1991-93 and the Director of Sports for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta before serving as AD at Houston from 2002-09.

While at Miami, the Hurricanes won the national championship in football, and the baseball team finished third in the College World Series.

Under his direction at Houston, the Cougars captured 20 Conference USA championships and donations to the Cougar Pride fundraising arm nearly tripled.
