WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - California women's tennis sophomore Jana Juricova and juniors Mari Andersson and Marina Cossou were each named to the 2010 Pacific-10 All-Conference team, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Thursday, April 29. The three Golden Bears push Cal's total all-conference selections to 43 all-time with 24 first-teamers. This is the fourth consecutive year in which at least three Bears have been selected to the Pac-10 All-Conference team.
Juricova repeats last year's first-team selection while Cossou received her third overall award; second on the first team. Andersson was named to the second team for a second straight year.
Last year's conference freshman of the year, Juricova was Cal's only first-team selection a year ago. She was also the only freshman to receive a first-team award in 2009. In 2010, she is again the youngest player to earn first-team honors as the only sophomore on a list of juniors and seniors. The No. 2-ranked native of Piestany, Slovak Republic, leads the Bears with a 36-6 mark in singles matches and went 20-3 in duals with a perfect 7-0 record in Pac-10 matches. She is also 30-8 in doubles matches with Andersson this season. The No. 9-ranked defending NCAA champions are 20-2 in duals with an unscathed 7-0 record in Pac-10 matches.
Cossou's selection to the all-conference team is her third in as many years. She received first-team honors as a freshman and a second-team selection as a sophomore. The 18th-ranked native of Azereix, France ranks third on the team with a 28-9 singles record. She is 14-4 in duals and has posted 19 doubles victories this season. Cossou is 17-3 in matches where she has partnered with senior Kasia Siwosz. The duo produced a 16-2 mark in duals with a 4-1 Pac-10 record this spring.
No. 37-ranked Andersson is second on the team with a 30-9 singles record and boasts a remarkable 21-2 record in duals (6-1 in Pac-10 matches). She has had streaks of nine and 12 consecutive matches won this season. The native of Bastad, Sweden was also a second-team selection in 2009. As one half of the defending NCAA doubles championship duo with Juricova, Andersson has posted a 30-8 record this season.
The 12th-ranked Bears (18-5, 5-2 Pac-10) completed the regular season in third place and won five of their last six matches down the stretch. The team anticipates its 29th selection to the NCAA championship tournament when bids are announced live on ESPNews on Tuesday, May 4, at 2 p.m. PT. Please check CalBears.com for more information.
