BERKELEY -
California field hockey head coach Shellie Onstead announced the signing of seven players to National Letters of Intent. Onstead's incoming freshmen will be coming to Berkeley from all over the country, and the world, with signees from Southern California, Pennsylvania, and two international recruits from Canada and The Netherlands.
One of the international recruits is midfielder Shannon Elmitt, hailing from West Vancouver, British Columbia. Elmitt brings a fair share of experience, garnering North Shore all-star honors twice (2006, 2009) and winning the British Columbia Provincial Championship twice, as well (2007, 2008). She also played for the Canadian National Field Hockey team for three years (2008-2010), and most recently in the World Cup Qualifier.
Rosa Stabler, who hails from the Dutch town of Groningen, won three straight Northern District Championships both indoors and outdoors, and also played for the Dutch National U-17 team in 2008.
Onstead also signed four recruits with Southern California, including forward Andrea Earle from San Diego. Earle has three San Diego Section Division II Championships under her belt (2007-2009), as well as a Cal Cup Championship in 2008. She also won the AAU Junior Olympic Team Championship in 2008 and played in three straight USFHA Futures Tournaments (2007-2009).
Also from San Diego is midfielder Allison Swartz, whose stellar senior year included such honors as CIF Western League Player of the Year, CIF Division II Player of the Year, CIF All-County Player of the Year, Team MVP and Serra Tournament MVP.
Southern California also produced Escondido product Courtney Hendrickson, a goalie from San Pasqual High School. Hendrickson played on the Avocado League Championship team twice (2007, 2009). She is also the daughter of former Cal and NFL football product Steve Hendrickson (1989).
Rounding out the California recruits is Newport Beach forward Claire Layton, whose older sister, Elizabeth, is currently a senior on the Cal women's water polo team. As captain of the Divots Field Hockey Club, Layton led her team to the National Festival Tournament championship in 2008.
Coming from the state of Pennsylvania is attacker/midfielder Jordan O'Reilly, who made second-team all-state in 2009. O'Reilly was part of the National Festival A-Pool Championship squad.
