Zach Maynard Teleconference Quotes
(BERKELEY) - Cal head coach Jeff Tedford announced Saturday that junior Zach Maynard will be the team's starting quarterback heading into the 2011 season. The Golden Bears open training camp on Aug. 6, with the 2011 season opener vs. Fresno State at Candlestick Park in San Francisco scheduled four weeks later on Sept. 3.
"Zach showed a tremendous amount of upside during spring practice and is the quarterback that gives us the best opportunity to win football games," said Tedford. "He has the ability to both throw and run the ball effectively, giving us another dimension at that position that we haven't had in a while."
"I'm excited and honored to have been named the starting quarterback at Cal," said Maynard. "I enjoyed competing for the job with some excellent competitors during spring practice and will continue to work hard to keep the starting role. I have an excellent opportunity to help lead this football team and plan to take full advantage of it."
Maynard accepted a scholarship offer from Cal in February of 2010 and sat out last season to become eligible after transferring from Buffalo. He has two years of eligibility remaining at Cal.
Maynard played in all 12 games and started 11 contests during his 2009 sophomore campaign with the Bulls when he completed 218-of-379 passes (57.5%) for 2,694 yards and 18 TDs with 15 interceptions. He was also Buffalo's third-leading rusher with 300 yards on 87 carries and one touchdown on the ground. Maynard had a huge day in the second start of his career against Big East power Pittsburgh, passing for career highs of 400 yards and four touchdowns to set and tie single-game school records as he hit on 24-of-35 attempts. Maynard was named the Mid-American Conference East Division Performer of the Week. He rushed for a career-high 61 yards on six carries and scored his rushing touchdown against Miami, Ohio.
Sophomore Allan Bridgford and senior Brock Mansion will be co-listed at No. 2 on the team's post-spring depth chart.
After playing the last 88 seasons and every home game at Memorial Stadium since the facility opened for the 1923 Big Game, Cal will host its home games outside of Berkeley for the first time in 2011 while Memorial Stadium undergoes an extensive renovation and retrofit.
