BERKELEY - Excelling in the classroom and in the gym is a hallmark of the California men's gymnastics program, and seven Golden Bears lend further proof to that fact for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation deemed them worthy of spots on the All-Academic team. Eric Haeussler, Daniel Geri, Bryan del Castillo, Dennis Mannhart, Jean Monteclaro, Donothan Bailey and Daniel Culpepper earned themselves placement on the coveted squad.
The student-athletes were nominated for this award by their institution based on the following criteria: 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average and at least a sophomore academically, the student-athlete must have completed one full academic year at the institution prior to the season for which the award is being received and the student-athlete must have competed in 50 percent or more of the institution's competition.
With seven student-athletes on the All-Academic team, the Bears were second amongst all programs in the MPSF.
The Bear squad closed its campaign in fourth place in the NCAA Team Championships. Cal had six different Bears win All-America titles. Of the seven Bears on the All-Academic team, del Castillo and Bailey also earned All-America status. At the Conference Championships, Cal finished third with del Castillo taking third on high bar and Bailey finishing sixth in the all-around.
