Freshman pitcher Kyle Porter added another honor to his resume, being named a Freshman All-American by Baseball America Porter was one of six pitchers on the the Freshman All-America second team as announced by the publication.
This is the second Freshman All-American honor earned by Porter this season. He was previously named to the 2011 Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball Freshmen All-American team in early June. He was also selected to the 2011 NCAA Houston Regional All-Tournament Team after throwing a career-high 6.2 innings in only his third career start with three hits, no runs, two walks and a career-high nine strikeouts in an 8-0 shutout of Baylor.
Primarily a reliever this season, Porter went 6-0 for the Bears with a 1.89 ERA in 25 appearances. He becomes only the eighth freshman All-American in Cal history, and is the sixth freshman All-American since David Esquer became the Bears' head coach in 2000.
Last season, Cal had two freshman All-Americans - left-hander Justin Jones and second baseman Tony Renda. Senior right-hander Kevin Miller was a freshman All-American in 2008. Former Golden Bear and current Arizona Diamondback Xavier Nady was the National Freshman of the Year in 1998.
