SAN JOSE, Calif. - Though he has competed on the international and national championship stage, Glen Ishino is set for one of the biggest outings of his career - the U.S. Olympic Trials. On Thursday, the recently graduated Ishino will attempt to qualify to don the red white and blue on the first day of competition at the HP Pavilion in San Jose.
"Glen is more prepared than he's ever been for a competition, so I'm very confident that he will have an incredible outing," Cal head coach Tim McNeill said. "He has been more focused than I've ever seen him during these past few weeks of preparation. He also has had very good training the past couple of days here in San Jose at the arena. I have all the confidence in the world in Glen, and I can't wait for him to compete and show everyone what he's capable of!"
Ishino closed out his collegiate career as the 2012 NCAA champion on pommel horse, scoring a 15.600 on his signature event. In addition to honors on pommel, the Santa Ana, Calif., native also earned All-American status on high bar, on which he took silver at the NCAA individual championships.
"I am just really honored and grateful to have this opportunity to be going to trials," Ishino said. "I feel like all these long hours and hard work has finally paid off. Working out with the national team is incredible, and training has been going well so far."
A four-year All-American on pommel horse, Ishino will look to pommel for his greatest success. As a freshman in 2009, Ishino earned All-America status on high bar, pommel and parallel bars. He repeated on pommel in 2010 and 2011.
The first day of the men's competition, which is set to get underway Thursday at 2 p.m., will be shown on a tape-delayed basis on NBC Sports. The finals, which start at noon on Saturday, will be streamed live on NBCOlympics.com and broadcast on NBC.
