California senior catcher Chadd Krist - the Golden Bears' record holder with 65 career doubles and a two-time first-team all-conference selection - was drafted in the ninth round by the Chicago Cubs Tuesday (June 5) in the Major League Amateur Draft. It was the second year in-a-row Krist had been drafted by a team from Chicago as he was a 13th round pick of the Chicago White Sox following the 2011 season.
This season, Krist hit .294 with a team-best 19 doubles, including four doubles in Cal's season-ending series victory at Stanford. He also had four home runs and 36 RBI on the year, and finished his career with 213 hits, 18 home runs and 133 RBI in 195 games. Krist finished with an even .300 (213-for-710) career batting average.
Krist was instrumental in the Bears advancing to the 2011 College World Series, leading the Pac-10 with 27 doubles last season and earning NCAA Houston Regional All-Tournament honors.
As a sophomore, Krist batted .344 with 44 RBI and helped Cal to the Norman, Okla. NCAA Regional. He is the 61st Bear drafted since David Esquer became head coach in 2000 and is the 26th Bear selected in the top 10 rounds under Esquer. Krist joins Tony Renda, a second round draft pick of the Washington Nationals, as Cal players selected in the 2012 professional baseball draft.
