Bears Shutout Huskies, Earn First Conference Win

BERKELEY, Calif. -- California sophomore goalkeeper Jill Stephenson kept Washington off the scoreboard for the first time in 11 matches this season and the Golden Bears registered a goal in each half to earn their first Pacific-10 Conference victory, 2-0, in front of 248 fans at Witter Field Friday afternoon. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Bears and improved Cal's record to 6-7-1 (1-3 Pac-10) on the season.

Cal opened the scoring only four minutes into the match when senior Mary Oades was taken down by a Washington defender inside the penalty box and awarded a penalty kick. Oades drove the penalty shot past Washington goal keeper Leslie Weeks and the Bears had an early 1-0 lead.

The match remained scoreless until the 73rd-minute when freshman Gretchen Vanderlip, taking a cross from junior Jessica Stanton, settled the ball a the top of the box and beat both her defender and the Husky goal keeper for the Bears second goal of the match.

Stephenson made three saves and faced 12 Washington shots while notching her third shutout of the season. Cal registered 14 shots on the afternoon as the Bears outshot its opponent for the eighth time in 14 matches.

The Bears will wrapup the home portion of their schedule when they take on the Cougars of Washington State (7-7, 2-3 Pac-10) on Sunday, Oct. 26. The match is scheduled to kickoff at 12:00 noon.
