Womens's Soccer Defeats Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.-Cal Poly San Luis Obispo suffered its second overtime loss in a row, falling to California 2-1 in front of 502 fans at Mustang Stadium.
Cal Poly, (8-4) opened the scoring when senior forward Michelle Nuesca scored with a head-in goal off an assist by junior Shana Strickel at the 18:40 mark. The Bears (5-4-1), taking 12 of their 16 shots in the second half, scored after a corner kick by Natalie Struhlmueller was shot in by Courtney Carroll at the 76:14 mark.
Despite a breakaway attempt to score at the start of overtime by senior Stacy Dolder, the bears took control of the sudden-death period by not allowing the Mustangs to take a shot. Eleven minutes into overtime, Cal's Stacy Mallison scored on a tap in from the corner of the goalbox giving the Bear's the win.
Defensively, Cal Poly goalkeeper Natalie Garcia had a career-high 11 saves. The Mustangs will play in a conference matchup at 1pm this Sunday at UC Santa Barbara.
