No. 18 California Opens Season at Pac-10 Indoors

NO. 18 WOMEN OPEN SPRING SEASON AT INDOORS: The Cal women's tennis team will travel to Seattle, Wash. this week to compete at the annual Pac-10 Indoor Championships, Fri.-Sun., Jan. 17-19 at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Bears will join players from the conference's Northern and Southern Divisions to compete for individual indoor singles and doubles crowns.

THE DRAW: Seven Cal players will travel to Seattle this weekend in what may prove to be a preview of the Bears dual match lineups: Flight #1 singles - sophomores Amanda Augustus and Francesca La'O. Flight #2 singles - freshman Esther Knox and sophomore Stephanie Tibbits. Flight #3 singles - freshman Claire Curran and Emeka Mayes. Flight #1 doubles - Augustus/Curran. Flight #2 doubles - La'O/Knox or Donehew. Flight #3 doubles - Mayes/Swierniak. ,

LAST YEAR: Cal saw its greatest success at the 1996 Pac-10 Indoor Championships in doubles, as the No. 1 team of Augustus and Pam Elliott reached the Flight #1 doubles final before falling to Keri Phebus and Paige Yaroshuk of UCLA. In singles, the Bears best finisher was senior Pam Enkoji, who won the Flight #2 consolation bracket with a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Washington's Kari Luna.

CAL IN THE RANKINGS: The Bears are currently the No. 18-ranked team on the ITA's Rolex Fall Rankings, released Dec. 10. Individually, Cal players rank as follows:

THE COACHES: One of the Top 10 winningest coaches in women's collegiate tennis, Jan Brogan is in her 19th year as the Bears head coach with a career record of 342-139(.711). She is joined by first-year assistant Ann Henricksson, who spent more than 15 years on the women's professional tour.
