HEAD COACH BOB MILANO: The Bears skipper, who is in his 20th season at Cal, has a career record of 631-566-4 (.527)...Milano is the all-time winningest coach at Cal in terms of total victories, having passed Clint Evans (547-256 from 1930-54) Mar. 19, 1994 vs. Arizona (15-6)...he earned his 600th career win Feb. 24 with the Bears 5-3 victory over Fresno State...Milano has led Cal to six NCAA Regional berths ('80, '85, '88, '91, '92, '95) and three College World Series appearances ('80, '88, '92)...he was named Pac-10 South Co-Coach of the Year in 1980 and 1992...Milano will serve as the head coach of 1997 USA Baseball Team that will compete in the Intercontinental Cup, August 1-10 in Barcelona, Spain...

BEAR NOTES: The '97 Bears (13-23, 1-13) were swept by No. 2 ranked UCLA last weekend in Los Angeles and were outscored 30-2 (13-1, 9-0, 8-1)...it was the second weekend in a row Cal has been swept by a conference opponent and in the last six Six-Pac contests, the Bears have been outscored 72-16...despite the team struggling, sophomore shortstop Brian Oliver (Antioch, CA) is still having an outstanding sophomore season, starting all 36 games at shortstop (the only Cal player to start every game this season) and leading the Bears in average (.371), runs (26), hits (52), doubles (nine), triples (three), total bases (70), stolen bases (17-for-18, third in the Pac-10), walks (19), slugging percentage (.500), and on base percentage (.457)...Oliver is a third team preseason All-American in Collegiate Baseball and last year he became the first Freshman All-American (selected in both Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball) in Cal baseball history...he is one of eight Pac-10 players (including Bear teammate, sophomore catcher Jason Hill , Alamo, CA) invited to the summer training camp for the USA Baseball National Team, coached by Bob Milano...Cal closer Tyler Walker (Ross, CA) is another one of the Bears top players...Walker, the top rated amauter baseball player in the nation according to the Major League Scouting Bureau, is 3-3 with a team-high three saves and a 3.27 ERA...he has an impressive 34 strikeouts in 33.0 innings and is fifth in the conference in saves...Walker, who began his Cal career as a catcher, was 2-1 with a save and a 3.58 ERA last year as a redshirt freshman and was selected the Top Professional Prospect at the National Baseball Congress World Series last summer...freshman submarine pitcher Jon Cuccias (0-0, one save, Woodland Hills, CA) has been impressive in league play so far this season...against Six-Pac competition, Cuccias has only given up one earned run and has eight strikeouts in 13.7 innings for a 0.66 ERA...senior first baseman John Furstenthal (Oakland, CA), junior left fielder/designated hitter Aaron Gordnier (Rocklin, CA) and freshman right fielder Juan Hernandez (Tracy, CA) are three more players who are having solid seasons...Furstenthal is performing well at the plate, batting .339 overall and .333 in conference play...he is a two-time GTE/CoSIDA Region 8 All-Academic selection...Gordnier, who entered the 1997 season with a .143 average and three career RBI, is batting .270 overall with a team-leading four home runs and 24 RBI...Hernandez has been the Bears top freshman position player, starting 34 of the team's 36 games in right field and batting .297 overall and .304 in league play...

ARIZONA: The Arizona Wildcats, coached by Jerry Stitt (1st year as head coach at Arizona, 25-16, .610), are 25-16, 8-7 (fourth in the Pac-10 Southern Division) after winning one-of-three games versus Stanford (lost 10-3, won 11-7, lost 4-2) last weekend in Tucson...top hitters for the Wildcats include junior center fielder Diego Rico (.387, 2 HR, 34 RBI), junior second baseman Erik Mattern (.368, 3 HR, 21 RBI) and junior designated hitter Tom King (.359, 1 HR, 11 RBI)...Arizona's tentative starting pitching rotation is sophomore right-hander Darrell Hussman (3-4, 5.69 ERA), sophomore left-hander James Johnson (3-4, 4.96 ERA) and sophomore left-hander Rob Shabansky (6-4, 3.45)...in 1996, the Wildcats were 24-32 overall (7-23, sixth in Pac-10 Southern Division play)...
