Cal Pro Baseball Updates
Former California pitcher Eric Ludwick (1991-92) won his first game with the Oakland A's Sunday against the Kansas City Royals in Kansas City. Ludwick (1-1), pitched 5.0 innings with five hits, two runs, three walks and two strikeouts in the A's 9-4 victory over the Royals. Ludwick came to Oakland in the trade that sent Mark McGwire to the St. Louis Cardinals.
As a Golden Bear, the hard-throwing Ludwick was 6-4 with a 6.49 in two seasons before transferring to UNLV.
In other professional baseball news concerning former Cal baseball players, infielder Chris Clapinski (1990-92) was called up to the major leagues Sunday by the Florida Marlins. Earlier in July, Clapinski had been called up and played briefly with the Marlins, as well.
At Cal, Clapinski helped lead the Bears to the NCAA Midwest Regional final at Wichita State in 1991 and an NCAA East Regional title and a College World Series appearance in 1992. He finished his college career with a .332 batting average with 46 doubles, three triples, 18 home runs and 107 RBI. He signed as a free agent with Florida after his junior year.
