Cuccias, Nady do Well at National Team Trials
Two current University of California baseball players, sophomore
reliever Jon Cuccias and freshman second baseman Xavier Nady, were two of
66 players invited to the 1998 USA Baseball National Team Trials Nov. 5-9
in Tucson, AZ. The trials were held at Hi Corbett Field, home of USA
Baseball and the Cactus League spring training home of the Colorado
Rockies.
Both Cuccias and Nady performed well at the five-day tryout. Cuccias
made appearances in three ballgames, pitched 3.7 innings and was 2-0 with a
save. Nady started in two of the four games he played in, batting .333
(2-for-6) with a double and a home run.
Cuccias, a righthanded submarine pitcher from Woodland Hills, CA, was
2-0 with three saves and a team-leading 3.38 ERA for the Bears last season.
Nady, the leading candidate to start at second base for Cal this spring, is
from Salinas, CA and was a fourth-round draft pick by the St. Louis
Cardinal in last June's amatuer baseball draft.
