Cal Baseball Defeats Oregon State 8-6
BERKELEY, Calif. - The University of California baseball team defeated visiting Pac-10 Northern Division foe Oregon State, 8-6, Friday
at Evans Diamond in Berkeley, CA. The Bears improved to 8-7 overall, while the Beavers fell to 4-3-1 on the season.
Cal was led by the pitching of senior starter Drew Fischer (2-2), who despite giving up nine hits and six runs, including four runs in the top of
the second inning, ended up throwing a total of seven innings with only one walk and had seven strikeouts to earn the win. Junior Jim Vorhis
came up with a big relief effort in the eighth inning for the Bears. Vorhis replaced Fischer with the bases loaded and no outs and was able to
force B.J. Hardtke to hit into a double play (which scored one run) and was able to get Ryan Lipe to ground out to third to end the inning.
Sophomore Tyler Walker came on in the ninth inning and had two strikeouts to earn his second save of the season.
A top hitter for Cal was third baseman Jim Schmidt, who had a key two-run single with the bases loaded in the sixth off of Oregon State reliever
Jason Bronson. The Bears were also 7-for-7 in stolen base attempts against Oregon State.
The losing pitcher for the Beavers was starter Andrew Checketts (1-2), who threw 5.0 innings with six hits, five runs, only one earned run,
one walk and had five strikeouts. Oregon State was plagued by five errors, including three errors in the Bears four-run third inning.
The Beavers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning on a RBI single by Mike Leone, a RBI double by Tyson Vermillion and a RBI single by
Abino Vazquez. OSU had scored its other run in the second on an errant throw by Fischer on a pick-off attempt to first base. The Bears came
back by scoring a run in the second, four runs in the third and three runs in the sixth. The Beavers battled back to get within 8-6 by scoring
single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Leone finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBI, including a lead-off heom run in the seventh inning.
The Bears next contest will be the second game of the three-game series versus Oregon State, beginning Saturday, Feb. 22 at 1 p.m. at Evans
Diamond.
