Cal Baseball Defeated By Arizona State, 7-5
BERKELEY, Calif. - The University of California baseball
team was defeated by visiting Pacific-10 Conference foe Arizona State,
7-5, Monday at Evans Diamond. Cal goes to 12-17 overall and 1-8 in
conference, while Arizona State improves to 19-11, 5-7 in league. The
Sun Devils had won Friday's contest, 13-9. The Bears won Saturday's
game, 6-4, and Sunday's game was rained out.
Arizona State broke a 5-5 tie by scoring two runs off of Cal
reliever Andy Jensen (0-1) in the seventh inning for the 7-5 win.
After getting the first out of the inning, Jensen gave up a single to
Dan McKinley. McKinley then stoled second base and eventually scored
on two wild pitches by Jensen. The Sun Devils second run of the
seventh came on a two-out RBI double by Mike Grijalua.
Arizona State had jumped out to a 3-0 lead, scoring two runs in
the first inning on an RBI single by Andrew Beinbrink and a sacrifice
fly by Mikel Moreno, and a run in the second inning on a lead-off home
run by Richy Leon. Cal came back and took a 5-3 lead by scoring five
runs in the third inning, with the big hits being a two-run single by
Jason Hill and a two-run double by Juan Hernandez. The Sun Devils tied
the game in the fifth inning on a two-run homer by Dustin Delucchi.
The winning pitcher for Arizona State was reliever Jeff Cermak
(3-1), who came in in the fourth inning and pitched 6.0 innings with
two hits, no runs, no walks and had two strikeouts.
Cal will next host Washington State for single game at Evans
Diamond, Tuesday, Mar. 18 at 11 a.m. The Bears were originally
scheduled to play Washington State on Monday, but made up the Sunday
rainout against Arizona State on Monday instead.
