California Knocks off Long Beach State
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- California scored three runs in the top of the first inning, and basically traded single runs the rest of the way, defeating Long Beach State, 6-4.
Shortstop Brian Oliver went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and scored two runs, while Jim Schmidt was 3-for-4 and scored twice.
Jon Shirley (2-0) went the first six, allowing two runs on six hits, in picking up the win.
Tyler Walker finished up for his first save of the season, throwing three innings of four-hit ball.
The Bears improved to 6-6, while Long Beach State fell to 4-5.
Cal returns to the diamond Monday as the Bears complete the four-game series with Long Beach State.
