Cal Baseball Defeats Washington State, 7-6 In 10 Innings
BERKELEY, Calif. - The University of California baseball
team defeated visiting Pacific-10 Conference Northern Division foe
Washington State, 7-6 in 10 innings, Tuesday at Evans Diamond. Cal
improves to 13-17 overall, while Washington State falls to 2-15. It
was the Bears third extra-inning game this season (1-2).
Cal catcher Jason Hill knocked in the game-winning RBI single with
the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning to lead the Bears to
the win. Washington State reliever Marcus Glaze had replaced Todd
Meldahl (1-1) with the bases loaded and was able to get John
Furstenthal to fly out to left field before yielding the single to
Hill. Meldahl had given up back-to-back-to-back singles to Jim
Schmidt, Brian Oliver and Aaron Gordnier to begin the bottom of the
10th inning.
The winning pitcher for Cal was reliever Tyler Walker (3-1), who
came in in the eighth inning and pitched 2.3 innings with one hit, no
runs, one walk and had four strikeouts. Walker struck out the side in
the Cougars 10th inning.
The leading hitter for the Bears was sophomore shortstop Brian
Oliver, who was 3-for-4 with a double. Top Washington State hitters
were Scott Randall (2-for-4, double) and Steve Gleason (2-for-4, two
RBI)
Cal will next travel to Stanford for the first game of a
three-game series, beginning Saturday, Mar. 22 at 1 p.m. at Sunken
Diamond.
