Spartan Baseball Downs Golden Bears, 18-8
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- San Jose State University scored
in each of the first five innings piling up a 16-4 lead and went
on to defeat the University of California, 18-8, in a
non-conference baseball game at Municipal Stadium.
The Spartans, 32-17, pounded out 20 hits with each starting
position player collecting at least one base hit. Freshman Rob
Douglas led the San Jose attack going 4-for-6 with 3 RBI and
three runs scored. First baseman Robert Berns added his eighth
home run of the season, a solo shot in the fourth inning.
Jeff Baker, the second of four Spartan pitchers, picked up
the win to raise his record to 4-1 by pitching 4.1 innings.
Baker surrendered just one run.
California, 17-31, had 17 hits including a 4-for-5
performance by shortstop Brian Oliver.
Cal used up seven pitchers with the loss going to starter Jason
Ball. Ball gave up four runs in the first inning of the game.
Riding a four game losing streak the Golden Bears begin a
three game Pac-10 series with Bay Area rival Stanford on Friday,
April 25.
