Santa Clara Baseball Defeats Cal
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Kevin Okimoto went 3-for-4 with
5 RBI, including a two-run homer to pace Santa Clara to a 14-9
victory in a non-conference game at Buck Shaw Stadium.
The win extends Santa Clara's win streak to 14 games and
improves the Broncos record to 30-16. Cal drops to 17-35.
Former Cal hurler Ryan Bulich picked up the win for Santa
Clara to improve to 2-1 on the season. The second of six SCU
pitchers, Bulich scattered two hits over three innings of work.
Jeff Frankel went 3-for-5 for Santa Clara.
Santa Clara trailed 5-3 heading into its half of the fourth
inning. Mike Frank drew a walk with bases loaded to cut the
lead to 5-4. With the bases still loaded, Okimoto drove in the
tying and go ahead runs with a single to right, giving SCU a 6-5
lead. The Broncos added another run in the inning to lead 7-5.
Okimoto came up big again in the bottom of the sixth,
crushing a two-run homer over the center field fence to extend
the Bronco lead to 9-5.
Cal cut the lead to 9-8 in the top of the seventh, scoring
three unearned runs. A bases loaded walk cut the lead to 9-6 and
then Aaron Gordiner followed with a single up the middle to
score to more runs to make the score 9-8.
In the bottom of the seventh, Santa Clara scored five
unearned runs, two of the runs coming home on a bases loaded
single by Bill Mott.
