Cal Falls to No. 5 Stanford, 12-6
BERKELEY, Calif. - The University of California baseball team
fell to No. 5 ranked Stanford, 12-6, Sunday at Evans Diamond. Cal goes
to 17-34 overall and 3-24 in Pac-10 Southern Division play, while
Stanford improves to 33-13 overall and 17-7 in league.
Stanford ended up sweeping Cal for the 1997 season.
It was the first time the Cardinal had swept the Bears in
league play since the 1990 season. Stanford won three straight earlier
in the season and defeated Cal 14-2 on Friday and 8-0 Saturday.
The Cardinal were led by a complete game effort from sophomore starter
Chad Hutchinson and four home runs--including two home runs by catcher
Jon Schaeffer and home runs by Chris Clark and Luke Quaccia.
After the game was tied 2-2 going into the third inning, Stanford
exploded for five runs in the third inning, including back to back
home runs by Schaeffer and Quaccia, and three runs in the fourth
inning to take a 10-2 lead. The Bears were able to get within 10-6
when Dan Garfin hit a grand slam home run off of Hutchinson in the
fourth inning. Cal reliever Reed Goemann was able to hold the Cardinal
for three innings before giving up a two-run homer to Schaeffer in the
eighth inning for the final 12-6 score.
Hutchinson improved his record to 4-3 pitching nine innings with seven
hits, five earned runs, two walks and seven strikeouts. The losing
pitcher for Cal was freshman starter Brad Steele, who went 2 2/3 innings
with seven hits, three earned runs, two walks and two strikeouts.
Cal will next travel to Santa Clara Tuesday at 7 p.m. at
Buck Shaw Stadium.
