AS A JUNIOR (1999): Went 6-5 with a 4.40 ERA and led the Bears in strikeouts (88) and innings pitched (94.0)...also threw an impressive five complete games, including three complete games in a row from Mar. 5-20...threw complete games Mar. 5 at Tennessee (seven hits, three runs, three walks, 10 strikeouts), Mar. 13 versus Washington State (six hits, two earned runs, three walks, seven strikeouts) and Mar. 20 versus Washington (two hits, no runs, five walks, eight strikeouts)...other complete games included Apr. 9 at USC (nine hits, four runs, one walk, five strikeouts) and Apr. 30 versus Arizona (three hits, no runs, one walk and a career-high 11 strikeouts)...another top game was Feb. 13 versus then No. 3 ranked Long Beach State, going 5.7 innings with two hits, no earned runs, three walks and seven strikeouts...was honorable mention All-Pac-10...
AS A SOPHOMORE (1998): Was 3-4 with a 5.09 ERA and team-high 72 strikeouts in 92.0 innings...defeated then No. 1 ranked Stanford Apr. 25 (7.0 innings, two hits, one run, four walks, three strikeouts), earning Pac-10 Southern Division Co-Player of the Week honors (Apr. 27)...other wins were Mar. 6 versus Connecticut at the Hormel Classic (7.0 innings, 13 hits, five runs, no walks, six strikeouts) and Mar. 11 versus UC Davis (2.0 innings, one hit)...in last outing got a no decision May 9 at Pac-10 Champion Washington (7.0 innings, seven hits, four runs, three walks, six strikeouts)...other no decisions included May 2 versus Arizona (career-high 8.0 innings, seven hits, three runs, two walks, eight strikeouts), Apr. 18 at national champion USC (5.7 innings, 10 hits, 10 earned runs, three walks, two strikeouts), Apr. 5 at UCLA (7.0 innings with five hits, four runs, four walks, career-high nine strikeouts), Mar. 28 versus USC (6.7 innings, eight hits, three runs, four walks, five strikeouts) and Mar. 21 at Arizona State (4.7 innings, two hits, two runs, one walk, four strikeouts)...had seven no decisions during the season...
AS A FRESHMAN (1997): Was 2-7 with a 5.47 ERA, a save and a team-leading 54 strikeouts in 82.3 innings...in last league outing, got his fifth no decision of the year May 2 versus UCLA (7.0 innings, 12 hits, three earned runs, one walk, three strikeouts)...other no decisions included Mar. 8 at USC (6.3 innings, nine hits, three runs, two walks, seven strikeouts) and Mar. 1 versus Arizona, pitching a career-high 7.3 innings (three hits, one run, four walks, three strikeouts)...earned win Feb. 22 versus Oregon State (6.0 innings, two hits, no runs, no walks, seven strikeouts)...picked up a save Jan. 30 at Hawaii, shutting down the Rainbows with the bases loaded and no outs in the ninth inning...first collegiate victory was Feb. 16 at Long Beach State (6.0 innings, two runs, three walks, one strikeout)...was the winner of the George Wolfman Award as the team's Most Improved Player...
HIGH SCHOOL/PERSONAL: At Stockdale High School in Bakersfield, was named league Pitcher of the Year and earned all-area, leading his team to the league title as a senior...competed in the Area Code Games in 1995...was also a member of a high school all-star team that traveled to Australia in the summer of 1996 and played on an AAU team that traveled to Florida in the summer of 1995...in the summer of 1998 pitched for the Brewster Whitecaps in the Cape Cod League, going 8-1 with a 2.22 ERA...had 45 strikeouts and 14 walks in 69.0 innings and was a starting pitcher in the Cape Cod League All-Star Game...this past summer pitched for the Santa Barbara Foresters, leading the Foresters to a 7-6 upset of the USA National Team (with Xavier Nady and Mike Tonis) Aug. 8 at the NBC World Series, pitching 7.7 innings with six hits, three earned runs, one walk and two strikeouts...was recruited by Arizona State, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Oklahoma before selecting Cal...is the first Stockdale High School athlete to earn an athletic scholarship to a Division I university...majoring in American studies...parents are Jerry and Nancy Shirley...born February 22, 1978 in Bakersfield, CA.
