Scott Beeten, considered one of the top recruiters in the country, is in his third season with the Cal basketball staff as associate head coach.

Beeten spent the previous seven years at George Washington University, helping the Colonials to three NCAA Tournaments, including a Sweet 16 berth in 1993.

Beeten began his coaching career in 1971 as a graduate assistant and freshman coach at Lehigh. In 1972, he moved to East Stroudsburg (Penn.) HS and compiled an 83-39 record, including four berths in the Pennsylvania State Tournament, in five years as head coach. He joined the Temple University staff under Don Chaney as a part-time coach in 1976, but left the Owls in 1977 to become head coach at Mainland (N.J.) Regional HS. In 1981, he led the team to the South Jersey and New Jersey state championships. In four seasons at Mainland, his record was 84-22.

Following the 1981 season, Beeten became junior varsity coach at Stockton State College, an NCAA Division III school in New Jersey. The next year, he was named head coach, leading the team to a 14-10 record.

Beeten then returned to the Division I ranks, serving as assistant coach (1983-85) and associate head coach ('85-88) at Pennsylvania. During his tenure there, Penn won two Ivy League titles and gained a pair of appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Beeten also coached the gold medal-winning U.S. Maccabiah Games team in 1985.

Beeten earned a bachelor's degree in history in 1971 and a master's degree in education, both from Lehigh University. As an undergraduate, he was a three-year starter for the Engineers in both basketball and baseball. As a baseball player, he was twice drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals.

Beeten and his wife, Anita, reside in Danville and have two sons, Chad and Todd. Chad and his wife, Tamara, reside in Dublin, Calif., while Todd played for Ben Braun at Eastern Michigan and is finishing his degree work there in December.
