Men's Water Polo Falls to No. 5 UCLA
PLEASANT HILL, Calif.-- The No. 5 ranked UCLA Bruins defeated the No. 4 California Golden Bears, 7-6, Sunday, boosting their overall record to 11-8. The Bears fall to 17-5 (6-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation).
The match remained scoreless in the first quarter until Cal sophomore driver Albert Won scored with 1:44 left in the quarter. The Bruins then retaliated with two goals, one scored by two meter freshman Dave Parker with 0:43 left and one scored by freshman driver Blake Wellen with only one second remaining in the quarter.
In the second quarter Cal came back with three goals scored by senior driver Jeff Moloughney (at 6:37), by junior driver Brad Kittredge (at 5:48) as well as by senior driver Ramsey Ross (at 5:01). With 3:08 remaining in the quarter, UCLA's Parker scored again. Bruin two meter freshman Sean Kern then tied the match, scoring on a six-on-five man advantage (at 0:44) after Cal junior goalkeeper Peter Kiefer was kicked out with 0:54 seconds remaining in the half.
In the third quarter, Kittredge assisted the Bears with a goal shot on a six-on-five man advantage 45 seconds into the quarter to give the Bears a 5-4 lead, but Kern again came back, scoring a goal to tie the match with 4:58 left in the quarter. With 59 seconds left, Cal two meter junior Ryan Flynn scored to give the Bears a 6-5 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Kern then scored two goals for the Bruins in the fourth quarter, one to tie the match with 3:58 left and one to secure the win with 1:55 remaining in the match.
The Bears will next travel to Stockton to face the Pacific Tigers Sat., Nov. 8 at 12:00 p.m.
