Cal Golfers Compete in World Championships
BERKELEY, Calif. - Cal golf standouts sophomore Dong Yi and junior Dan Arroyo competed for the USA-A team at the World Students Golf Championship Pacific Rim Tournament Aug. 12-14 in Tsu City, Japan.
Yi, who will return as Cal's No. 1 player this year, finished in 19th place, totalling 227 strokes. After shooting a 8-over-par 80 in the first round, Yi came back to shoot a 2-over-par 74 and 1-over-par 73 in the second and third rounds of the prestigous tournament, which featured teams from Japan, Taiwan, Korea and Austria.
Earlier this summer, Yi competed at the U.S. Amateur in Lemont, Ill. He had a two day total of 146 (75-74), but did not make the final cut. He also appeared "Faces in the Crowd" section of Sports Illustrated on (Aug. 18).
The Bears No. 3 player in '96, Arroyo had rounds of 78, 81 and 78 (237), which was good for a 30th place finish in Japan.
Japan won the tournament with a team total of 881, while the United States, which entered two teams, finished third (888) and fourth (900) in the seven-team contest.
Cal opens up its 1997 fall golf season Sept. 12-14 in Colorado Springs, Col., at the Air Force Invitational.
