Cal Brings Home Title: Cals final round comeback to win the 29th Falcon-Cross Creek Invitational last weekend set a tournament record. The Bears had a sizzling 285 over the final 18 holes to end the 54-hole tournament with a score of 865 to break the previous record of 874 set by Weber State in 1982. Freshman Adam Ainbinder finished in a tie for 74th place (78-75-76) in his first college outing. The victory at the Falcon-Cross Creek Tournament was Cals second in three years. In 1995, the Bears tied Rice for the title, but lost the trophy on a tie-breaker.

A Look At The Bears: The 1997-98 Bears have a roster that includes six juniors, two sophomores and four freshmen. Pacing the Bears in last weeks win at the Falcon-Cross Creek Invitational was junior Dan Coyle (Dundalk/Ireland), who averaged 76.3 strokes in spring 97. Also returning for Cal this season are junior Steve Golditch (Northridge/Taft HS) and sophomore Han Lee (Cerritos/Cerritos HS). Newcomers to the squad are freshman Adam Ainbinder (Huntington Beach/Servite HS), junior Tyler Brown (Danville/Chabot JC), freshman Walter Chun (Memphis, TN/Memphis University School), freshman Greg Goodfried (Encino/Birmingham HS), junior Josh Levin (San Francisco/USF) and freshman Craig Wolfman (Orinda/Miramonte HS).

Desimone, a 1970 Cal graduate and former member of the basketball team, led the Bears to a sixth-place finish in the Pac-10 last season. He has taken Cal to four NCAA West Regionals (90, 93, 95, 97) as well as an appearance in the 1995 NCAA championships, when the Bears finished sixth in the nation. Since Desimone has been at the helm, the golf program has produced three All-Americans.
