BEARS TRAVEL TO OREGON: The California men's golf team continues the 1997-98 season this week at the Nike Northwest Invitational Oct. 6-7 in Corvallis, Ore. The 54-hole tournament will be played at Trysting Tree Golf Club and features 36 holes on Monday, Oct. 6 and 18 holes on Tuesday, Oct. 7. The Bears did not compete in the tournament last year.
TOURNAMENT FIELD: The complete 22-team tournament field includes: Alabama-Birmingham, No. 19 BYU, California, Colorado State, Drake, Fresno State, Long Beach State, Minnesota, Nevada, Oregon, Oregon State, Pacific, Portland, Portland State, San Diego State, San Jose State, Stanford, Texas Lutheran, UCLA, UTEP, Washington and Washington State.
CAL WINS SECOND STRAIGHT TOURNAMENT: Cal's final round comeback to win the 26th annual Pacific Invitational Sept. 22-23 marked the second consecutive title the Bears have won during the fall season. Cal shot a blistering 15-under-par 849 to grab the tournament victory. Individually, the Bears were paced by sophomore standout Dong Yi, who shot an eight-under 208 (73-67-68) to finish in fourth place. Junior Dan Arroyo (66-73-70) finished in a tie with Stanford star Joel Kribel for fifth place with a three-round total of 209. Junior Dan Coyle, who led the Bears at the Falcon Invitational, finished at even-par 216 (70-73-73), good for a 27th place tie. Rounding out the Cal scores, junior Jay Berkowitz (71-77-72--220) and sophomore Han Lee (74-74-72--220) completed the tournament tied for 45th place.
A LOOK AT THE BEARS: The 1997-98 Bears have a roster that includes six juniors, two sophomores and four freshmen. Sophomore Dong Yi (Alameda/Alameda HS), the Bears No. 1 player a year ago, posted the Bears best scoring average last season (73.8) and competed in the U.S. Amateur this past summer as well as the World Student Golf Championship Pacific Rim Tournament. Junior Jay Berkowitz (Weaverville/Enterprise HS) had Cal's second best scoring average in 1996-97 (74.3). Last season, sophomore Dan Arroyo (Walnut Creek/ Northgate HS) was Cal's No. 3 man (74.9) and also competed at the World Student Golf Championship Pacific Rim Tournament in Japan. Pacing the Bears in last week's win at the Falcon-Cross Creek Invitational was junior Dan Coyle (Dundalk/Ireland), who averaged 76.3 strokes in spring '97. Also returning for Cal this season are junior Steve Golditch (Northridge/Taft HS) and sophomore Han Lee (Cerritos/Cerritos HS). Newcomers to the squad are freshman Adam Ainbinder (Huntington Beach/Servite HS), junior Tyler Brown (Danville/Chabot JC), freshman Walter Chun (Memphis, TN/Memphis University School), freshman Greg Goodfried (Encino/Birmingham HS), junior Josh Levin (San Francisco/USF) and freshman Craig Wolfman (Orinda/Miramonte HS).
HEAD COACH STEVE DESIMONE: Steve Desimone is in his 19th season as the head coach of the Golden Bears. Desimone, a 1970 Cal graduate and former member of the basketball team, led the Bears to a sixth-place finish in the Pac-10 last season. He has taken Cal to four NCAA West Regionals ('90, '93, '95, '97) as well as an appearance in the 1995 NCAA championships, when the Bears finished sixth in the nation. Since Desimone has been at the helm, the golf program has produced three All-Americans.
