Cal's Comeback Breaks Tournament Record
Junior Dan Coyle Comes in Second As Cal Wins Tourney
U.S.A.F. ACADEMY, Colo. -- The 29th annual Falcon-Cross Creek Invitational was one for the record books. California, thanks to a sizzling 285 over the final 18 holes, blew past the field to win its second title of the tournament in three years. The Golden Bears tied Rice for the tournament in 1995. Calis three-day total of 865 breaks the tournament record of 874 set by Weber State in 1982.
Cal junior Dan Coyle paced the Bears with a three-day total of 212 (71-69-72) to finish in second place. He ended just two strokes back of individual titleholder Jamie Rogers of Nebraska (69-71-70). Coyle shared the first place lead after the second day, but Rogers shot a smoking two-under par 70 to win the tournament. The Bears had four of their five golfers finish in the Top 25 to take the field by storm as they came from seven strokes back, ousting Colorado State (281), the leader after the first two rounds, by nine strokes for the victory.
