SPIKERS HOME FOR TWO: The Cal women's volleyball team (6-8, 1-4) returns home for a pair of Pac-10 matches this weekend. The Bears host the Arizona State Sun Devils (10-6, 1-4) on Friday, Oct. 10 and the #15 Arizona Wildcats (11-2, 3-2) on Saturday, Oct. 11. Both matches will be played at 7:30 p.m. at the RSF Fieldhouse.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: Arizona State is 10-6 overall, 1-4 in the Pac-10. Last weekend at home, the Sun Devils defeated Washington in five games and lost to #6 Washington State in four games. The Sun Devils opened the season with nine wins in their first 10 matches, but have since gone 1-5. Arizona is 11-2 overall, 3-2 in the Pac-10, after splitting at home last weekend. The Wildcats knocked off undefeated and 6th-ranked Washington State in five games last Friday, but then fell on Sunday to Washington in four games. The Wildcats only other loss this season was at #7 USC in three games. Arizona was ranked #15 in the Sept. 30 USA Today/AVCA Top 25 poll.
CAL vs. THE OPPONENTS: Arizona State leads the series with Cal, 18-8, including seven straight victories. The last Cal win over ASU was a four-game victory Nov. 7, 1992 in Berkeley. Arizona leads the series with Cal, 18-6, including a sweep last season. The Bears last victory over Arizona was Oct. 27, 1995 in Tucson, when the Wildcats were ranked #15. That was also Cal's last victory over a ranked opponent. Cal's last win over Arizona in Berkeley was Nov. 6, 1992 in a three-game sweep.
FIVE-GAME FITS: The Bears have had their hands full in five-game matches this season, posting a 2-4 record in matches that go the full distance. After going 1-8 in five-gamers last season, Cal appeared to have found the key to winning the long ones in the early going this season. The Bears not only posted two five-game victories at the Illinois State Classic, but they earned them both in the same day (Sept. 6), knocking off undefeated Tulsa in the morning, and coming back to beat host Illinois State in the evening championship match. But, Cal has struggled since that tournament, dropping five-game matches to Sacramento State, New Mexico, Oregon State and #21 UCLA.
LAST WEEK: The Bears came close to getting their first-ever win against the UCLA Bruins, but #21 UCLA charged back from a 2-1 game deficit to take a five-game marathon match at Pauley Pavilion, 14-16, 15-10, 16-18, 15-13, 15-11. In a match that was televised live by Fox Sports as the Pac-10 Match of the Week, the Bears took two of the first three games, including a 16-14 win in game one and 18-16 in game three. Cal was poised to put away the match in game four, holding a 10-4 lead, but UCLA rallied with eight unanswered points to take a 12-10 lead and went on to win the game, 15-13. The teams battled to a 6-6 tie in the fifth game, but three quick kills by UCLA gave them a 9-6 lead and the momentum. The Bears pulled back within two points, 13-11, but UCLA put down a kill and a block on the next two serves to win the game (15-11) and match. Senior Michelle Wickman had a career-high 25 kills to lead the Bears, while freshman Alicia Perry added 15 kills and 15 digs. Cal continued to battle the next day at #7 USC, but lost a tough four-game match, 15-6, 15-6, 12-15, 15-13. After dropping the first two games, the Bears tried some different combinations on the court and rallied for a 15-12 win in the third game. The Bears appeared ready to send the match to a fifth game, as they held a 13-11 lead in game four, but the Trojans scored four straight points to take the game, 15-13, and match. Sophomore Brook Coulter led the Bears with 13 kills and 10 digs, and Alicia Perry added 12 kills. Senior Brooke Weaver added 10 kills in her first substantial playing time of the season.
DINABERG'S DOUBLE: When senior hitter Jessica Dinaberg put down her 18th kill of the Illinois State Classic during the Tulsa match, she became just the third player in Cal history to record 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs. The other two Bears in the 1,000-1,000 club are Lisa Arce (1987-90) and Tiffany Rochelle (1986-89). Dinaberg now ranks fourth in all-time kills (1128), kill attempts (3274) and digs (1168) at Cal, and has a legitimate shot to move into third place in each category before her career comes to a close in Berkeley.
HEAD COACH SUE WOODSTRA: Sue Woodstra is in her third year at the helm of the Golden Bears, with a record of 27-43 at Cal. A two-time U.S. Olympic team member and one of nine Olympians to currently head a women's collegiate volleyball team, Woodstra has posted a 137-82 record in six seasons as a collegiate head coach, including four years at Pittsburgh. Her assistant coaches are Oscar Crespo, Stephanie Shrieve and Ed Cohen.

JESSICA DINABERG: The senior hitter leads the Bears in kill average (3.28 kpg) and dig average (2.72 dpg)...named tournament MVP at the Illinois State Classic and to the all-tournament team at the Colorado State tournament...earlier this season, became just the third player in Cal history to post 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs (1128 kills, 1168 digs), and only the 29th player in Pac-10 history to accomplish that feat...ranks fourth in career kills, kill attempts and digs at Cal...had a season-high 24 kills against Oregon State and 23 kills vs. New Mexico...recorded a season-high 20 digs vs. New Mexico and Oregon...has been the team leader in kills in seven matches this season.

BROOK COULTER: The sophomore hitter leads the Bears in service aces (19) and ranks sixth in the Pac-10 in ace average (0.35 apg)...recorded a career-high six service aces against Tulsa...in last three matches, has averaged 2.7 kills per game, including season-high 16 kills against New Mexico and 14 kills against both Oregon and Oregon State...posted season-high 24 digs against New Mexico...named to the all-tournament team at the Notre Dame Tournament of Champions...posted career high two block solos and four total blocks against Oregon...has played in 54 of the team's 56 games, averaging 1.87 kills and 2.19 digs per game.

ALICIA PERRY: A redshirt freshman, she ranks second on the team in dig average (2.68 dpg) and kill average (2.64 kpg)...slammed a career-high 23 kills along with 18 digs and four blocks against Illinois State... recorded 14 kills and 12 digs against Oregon State...ranks second on the team with 14 service aces and seventh in the Pac-10 in service ace average (0.32 apg)...has four double-doubles this season, including 15 kills and 15 digs at UCLA last weekend.
