Cal Loses Marathon Match to UCLA, 3-2

LOS ANGELES -- The California women's volleyball team came close to breaking "the streak" Friday night at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion, but ultimately lost to the Bruins in a five-game, three-hour marathon - 14-16, 15-10, 16-18, 15-13, 15-11. UCLA is now 33-0 in the all-time series against Cal, and improved its record to 6-4 overall, 2-3 in the Pac-10. Cal feel to 6-7 overall, 1-3 in the conference.
One feat the Bears did accomplish was to take a game off the Bruins in Los Angeles, something they hadn't done since 1991. In fact, the Bears came out and won two of the first three games against UCLA, and were in control with a 10-4 lead in the fourth game.
But the Bruins battled back with eight unanswered points to take a 12-10 lead in game four, and went on to win the game, 15-13. The teams played to a 6-6 tie in the fifth and deciding game, but three quick kills by UCLA gave them a 9-6 lead and the momentum. Cal drew within two points, 13-11, but UCLA's Kara Milling put down a kill and then blocked the Bears to win game five, 15-11, and take the match.
Senior Michelle Wickman led the Bears with a career-high 26 kills and 15 digs. Senior Jessica Dinaberg and freshman Alicia Perry each added 13 kills. Milling led UCLA with a game and career-high 34 kills and 20 digs.
Cal returns to action Saturday to face #8 USC at 4 p.m.
