Sydney Chute enters her first season as the volunteer assistant coach for the Golden Bears. Chute comes to Cal from Saint Mary's College, where she served as a volunteer assistant for the Gaels from 2007-09.
"We are very fortunate to have Sydney join our staff," said head coach Rich Feller. "She is a fine young coach with solid playing experience and a thorough knowledge of the Pac-10 conference."
In 2009, Chute was part of a coaching staff that helped guide Saint Mary's to its second consecutive 20-win season as the Gaels posted the second-best record in program history at 23-5. Saint Mary's logged a perfect 13-0 mark at home and set new school records with an 11-match winning streak and a 13-1 record in West Coast Conference matches to net the program's first-ever WCC title. The Gaels made their fifth appearance in the NCAA tournament and nearly took out Pac-10 champion Stanford in the second round.
Prior to her stint as the Saint Mary's volunteer assistant, Chute was on staff full time as the Gaels' second assistant from 2005-06. In her first season, Saint Mary's setter Mandy Bible reached second all-time in the school record books for assists. Chute was a key figure in guiding Bible to two straight All-West Coast Conference first team selections. Bible averaged 12.53 assists, 2.09 digs and 1.19 blocks per set for the Gaels.
Chute served as a head coach for the NorCal Volleyball Club in 2005 and coached both the men's and women's club volleyball teams at Oregon in 2003-04. She was the 16 Silver's Webfoot Juniors volleyball club head coach in 2003 and was also the head coach for the North Eugene High School junior varsity team for two years.
As a Fab 50 recruit out of Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa, Calif., Chute chose to attend Oregon and played as a setter under the direction of head coaches Cathy Nelson and Carl Ferreira from 1999-02. She led the Ducks in assists in three consecutive seasons (1999-01) and is currently Oregon's sixth all-time career leader in assists with 2,156. She also led the Ducks in service aces one season with 39 in 2000. Chute received Pac-10 All-Freshman honorable mention in 1999 and earned Pac-10 All-Academic second team honors in 2001.
Chute received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Oregon in 2003 and earned a Master of Kinesiology from Saint Mary's College in 2006. She currently resides in Oakland, Calif.
