Ryan Newell enters his first season as the volunteer assistant coach for the Cal women's volleyball program.
Newell comes to the Golden Bears from Chico State where he was the volunteer assistant coach for the Wildcats from 2005-08. Working mainly on individual basic techniques with players, Newell helped Chico State to 71 wins in four seasons. During his time with the Wildcats, he was also a coach for Gold Medal Squared Volleyball Camps.
As an outside hitter for the Chico State men's club volleyball team, Newell served as president, team captain and the trip coordinator over the course of four years. In 2008, he was selected as the Division I-AA MVP at the NIRSA (National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association) national championships in Dallas, Texas and earned a spot on the NCCVL (Northern California Collegiate Volleyball League) Division I All-League second team.
Newell received a bachelor degree in business administration with an emphasis in organizational management from Chico State in 2008. He is a member of the Sigma Nu International Fraternity and currently resides in Berkeley, Calif.
