Matt Lucena - 1995 U.S. Open Mixed Doubles Champion
In 1990, Doug Eisenman and Matt Lucena added another
milestone to Cal's esteemed tennis tradition, becoming the
first team in collegiate history to claim the doubles Grand
Slam. The pair finished the season with a career-best No. 1
ranking after winning the Volvo Collegiate, Rolex Indoor and
NCAA doubles championships. Lucena then teamed with Bent-Ove
Pedersen to capture a second NCAA title in 1991 before
receiving an invitation to the '91 U.S. Open. The twosome
shocked the tennis world by defeating eighth-seeded Luke
Jensen and Laurie Warder en route to the tournament's
quarterfinal round.
In 1995, Lucena once again proved himself to be a force on
the professional tennis scene, as he brought home the U.S.
Open mixed doubles championship with partner Meredith
McGrath. The pair won their first-ever Grand Slam title in
their first professional outing with a 6-4, 6-4 defeat of
Cyril Suk and Gigi Fernandez.
