Cal Enters Final Homestand

BEARS HOST CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE:
The California Golden Bears (10-6-1, 2-2) will host Cal State Northridge (4-10-1) Friday, Nov. 7 at 3 p.m. in the final regular season game of 1997. The Bears are coming off a recent loss to No. 1 Indiana (3-1) and a second-place finish in the California-adidas Foot Locker Classic. The Bears hold a 6-1 series advantage over the Matadors with a 5-1 victory last season. Returners Adam Hunter, Brandon Moggio and Ryan Fitzpatrick had goals in the win.
WEEK TEN HIGHLIGHTS:
Cal split two matches last weekend in the California-adidas Foot Locker Classic, winning the opening game against San Francisco (2-1) before losing the championship game to Indiana (3-1). The Bears defeated San Francisco Friday night when sophomore Derrick Dyslin found the back of the net on a free kick for the game-winner at the 72-minute mark. Senior Mike Haralambakis set up the play and was credited with the assist. Senior Adam Hunter scored the Bears first goal. Junior Brandon Moggio controlled the midfield., while Cal goalkeeper Doug Brooks had a solid match, posting three saves.
On Sunday, the Bears faced the nation's only undefeated team in the Indiana Hoosiers, which entered the game with a perfect 17-0 record. Cal held Indiana, which boasts an offense that averages over four goals a game, in check for the first half. Strong defense by Dyslin and sophomores Tim Castillo and Doug Juday allowed the Hoosiers only one goal in the first half. But Indiana's Dema Kovalenko nailed a goal just 13 minutes into the second half to give the Hoosiers the 2-0 lead. Cal junior Juan Luis Romero scored his first goal of the season in the 69th minute to cut the lead to 2-1, but Indiana closed the half with another goal for the 3-1 victory.
THREE BEARS MAKE ALL-TOURNEY TEAM:
The Bears placed three players on the all-tournament team of the California-adidas Foot Locker Classic, including Defensive MVP Derrick Dyslin. Besides playing commanding defense, he also netted the game-winning goal off of a free kick in Cal's 2-1 win over San Francisco Friday night. Senior Adam Hunter and junior Brandon Moggio were also selected to the all-tournament team. Hunter, the team's leading scorer, continued his sparkling offensive play with a goal in the Friday victory. Moggio, the Bears center midfielder, was selected for his outstanding all-around play.

IN THE HUNT:
Senior forward Adam Hunter, the Bears leading scorer a year ago, is in the hunt for the scoring title again this season. Hunter continues to hold the number one slot with 19 points on eight goals and three assists. He is also moving up on Cal's career lists in goals and assists. Currently, he ranks tied for third in career goals with 25 and holds the fifth spot for career assists with 16.
EYE ON THE MARK:
Goalkeeper Doug Brooks, only a sophomore, is once again in the record books for single season shutouts. As a freshman, he collected six shutouts on the year to move into a tie for fourth place. So far this season, he has tallied seven shutouts to stand alone in fourth place. Brooks has 13 total shutouts in his career, which also places him in a tie for fourth place. A two-year starter, he has the potential to takeover the No. 1 spot before his career is over. The career mark, set by Todd Harmon (1984-86), stands at 31.
THE COACHES:
Head coach Mark Mallon is in his fifth season at the helm for the Bears with a school and career record of 41-45-8. Last season, Mallon guided Cal to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1986. He is joined for the third year by assistant coach Lyle Yorks, a former All-American at the University of Virginia and goalkeepers coach Raffi Kardzair, who played at the University of San Francisco.
THROW-INS:
Dyslin and Romero notched their first goals of the year this past weekend ... the Bears tied Indiana on shots taken with 12 ... Cal is averaging 2.06 goals per game ... since losing junior midfielder John Beck to a broken leg Sept. 21, the Bears have gone 6-6-0. With Beck, Cal was 4-0-1 ... five players -- Hunter, Ganal, Brooks, Dyslin amd junior Matt Newmark -- have started all 17 games for Cal this year ... 17 Bears have scored at least one point this season ... Cal has outshot its opponents, 313-173.
