BEARS HOST ROLLING THUNDER CLASSIC:
The Golden Bears (9-5-1, 2-2) will host the California-adidas Foot Locker/Rolling Thunder Classic Oct. 31-Nov. 2. They will face USF (8-8, 2-3 WCC) Friday, Oct. 31 at 7:30 p.m. in San Francisco. No. 2 Stanford (13-0-2, 3-0-1 MPSF) will meet No. 1 Indiana (16-0-0, 5-0-0 Big Ten) in the preceding game at 5 p.m. On Sunday, Nov. 2, the tournament will conclude in Memorial Stadium on the Berkeley campus. The first matchup will be San Francisco and Stanford at 1 p.m., while the Cal versus Indiana contest will kickoff at 3 p.m.
WEEK NINE HIGHLIGHTS:
The Bears were upset in the opening game of the Fullerton Invitational by UC Irvine, 1-0. Irvine's Robert Melendez kicked in a loose ball that had bounced off Cal goalkeeper Doug Brooks for the only goal of the match. The Bears oushot the Anteaters, 12-9, but were unable to convert any of their opportunities. Brooks had five saves in the loss.
Cal recovered to pound Cal State Fullerton, 4-0, in the final game of the tournament. Four different Bears recorded goals in the one-sided affair. Sophomore J.V. Ganal had a wide open net off a Ramiro Arrendondo assist to score the game's opening goal. Freshman Kendall Simmonds followed up late in the first half with a header off a throw in by sophomore Doug Juday to give Cal the 2-0 lead at the break. The Bears had only two shots in the second half, but made good on both as junior Raul Ornelas and senior Adam Hunter found the back of the net. Cal managed all four goals with just nine shots on goal. Brooks had a solid performance in goal, logging nine saves and posting his seventh shutout of the season.
HUNGRY HUNTER:
Senior forward Adam Hunter, the Bears leading scorer a year ago, is hungry for the scoring title again this season. Hunter continues to hold the number one slot with 17 points on seven goals and three assists. He is also moving up on Cal's career lists in goals and assists. Currently, he ranks tied for third in career goals with 24 and holds the fifth spot for career assists with 16.
EYE ON THE MARK:
Goalkeeper Doug Brooks, only a sophomore, is once again in the record books for single season shutouts. As a freshman, he collected six shutouts on the year to move into a tie for fourth place. So far this season, he has tallied seven shutouts to stand alone in fourth place. Brooks has 13 total shutouts in his career, which also places him in a tie for fourth place. A two-year starter, he has the potential to takeover the No. 1 spot before his career is over. The career mark, set by Todd Harmon (1984-86), stands at 31.
THE TOURNAMENT FIELD:
The Rolling Thunder tournament features two unbeaten and top-ranked teams in No. 1 Indiana and No. 2 Stanford. Indiana, led by head coach Jerry Yeagly, boast the nation's seventh ranked point producer in sophomore Dema Kovalenko. The forward has 16 goals and three assists this season for 35 points. The Hoosiers goalkeeper is freshman T.J. Hanning, who sports a goals against average of 0.60 and ranks 10th among the nation's elite. No. 2 Stanford has the nation's No. 1 goalkeeper freshman Adam Zapala, who has only allowed three goals this year and has an unbelievable GAA of 0.19. The Cardinal is led by second-year head coach Bobby Clark. San Francisco, with 34th-year head coach Stephen Negoesco at the helm, is led by senior Keith Ratzburg who tallies 18 points on six goals and six assists.
THE COACHES:
Head coach Mark Mallon is in his fifth season at the helm for the Bears with a school and career record of 40-44-8. Last season, Mallon guided Cal to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1986. He is joined for the third year by assistant coach Lyle Yorks, a former All-American at the University of Virginia and goalkeepers coach Raffi Kardzair, who played at the University of San Francisco.
THROW-INS:
Since losing junior midfielder John Beck to a broken leg Sept. 21, the Bears have gone 5-5-0. With Beck, Cal was 4-0-1 ... five players -- Hunter, Ganal, Brooks, junior Matt Newmark and sophomore Derrick Dyslin -- have started all 15 games for Cal this year ... 15 Bears have scored at least one point this season ... Cal has outshot its opponents 293-161.
