No. 13 Cal Heads for Oregon State and No. 11 Washington

BEARS HIT THE ROAD: After opening Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play at home with a 1-0 defeat of Sacramento State, Cal (6-2-1, 1-0) heads to Oregon State and Washington to continue MPSF action. The Oregon State Beavers are 2-7-1 overall, 0-0 in MPSF. The series is tied at 4-4, but Cal fell to Oregon State, 2-1, last year in Berkeley. The Washington Huskies are 8-1-2, 1-0 and lead the series with the Bears 11-4-4. Last season, Cal defeated the No. 2-ranked Huskies 1-0 in overtime.
WEEK SIX HIGHLIGHTS: Cal opened the Stanford Invitational with a 2-1 overtime loss to No. 22 Dartmouth. The first half was a scoreless battle as both teams played outstanding defense. Senior Adam Hunter ended the drought to put the Bears up, 1-0, when he nailed a shot on the far post off an assist from freshman Kendall Simmonds in the 77th minute. But the Big Green responded quickly as junior Chris Dedicik launched an unassisted riser past Cal goalkeeper Doug Brooks to force the game into overtime. Dartmouth clinched the game 11 minutes into overtime, when a dribbler slipped past Brooks for the score, giving Dartmouth the 2-1 victory.
On Sunday, the Bears defeated the Harvard Crimson in a 5-0 blowout to wrap up the final round of the tournament. Five Cal players netted goals in the offensive surge that saw the Bears find the back of the net three times in the first 28 minutes. Sophomore J.V. Ganal opened the scoring in the 16th minute, with a shot to the far post. Simmonds followed suit with his second goal of the season at the 26:08 mark off a feed from sophomore Justin Bell. Senior Jason Young drilled a pass from junior Matt Newmark to give Cal the 3-0 lead a minute later. In the second half, Bell and freshman Ramiro Arrendondo hit for the other two goals. Defensively, Derrick Dyslin continued his commanding play as Cal shutout its opponent for the sixth time this year.
THREE BEARS ON All-TOURNEY TEAM: Three players from Cal freshman Kendall Simmonds, sophomore Derrick Dyslin and senior Adam Hunter were selected to the Stanford-Nike Invitational All-Tournament team. Earning his first start over the weekend, Simmonds came through for the Bears with one goal and one assist to earn his first collegiate all-tournament selection. Dyslin, who was voted the Brown-adidas Foot Locker Defensive MVP Sept. 14, collected his second straight all-tournament honors as a Bear. Hunter stepped up his play over the weekend, scoring the only Cal goal in the Dartmouth loss and tallying an assist in the Harvard contest.

BROOKS MINUTE STREAK ENDS: Doug Brooks, who had played 2,786 consecutive minutes for the Bears, sat out the second half of the Harvard game as the Bears had the lead, 3-0, at the break. An All-America candidate this season, the sophomore goaltender had played every minute of the Bears first eight and one-half games (806 min.) and the final 20 games (1,980 min.) last season. He has 38 saves, six shutouts and boasts a goals against average of just 0.78 in 1997. Only in his second season as the Bears netminder, Brooks already ranks fifth on the Cal list in career shutouts with 12. With his strong showing as a Bear in just one and a half seasons so far, he looks to be Cals all-time leading goalkeeper before his career is over.
BEARS IN THE RANKINGS: The Bears opened up the 1997 campaign with a preseason No. 12 ranking by Soccer America. In the Sept. 15 poll, Cal achieved its highest ranking, No. 9, in Soccer Americas poll and received its first ranking of the year (No. 14) in the National Soccer Coaches Association poll. The Bears are currently ranked No. 13 by Soccer America and No. 22 in the NSCAA poll.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Oregon State Beavers are led by tenth-year head coach Jimmy Conway. The Beavers leading scorer is junior midfielder Freddy Kummernes with three goals and two assist for eight points. Washington, with head coach Dean Wurzberger at the helm, is led by senior forward Jason Boyce who has 12 goals and one assist for 25 points to date. Senior goalkeeper Bill May has six shutouts, 36 saves and a 0.50 goals against average.
THE COACHES: Head coach Mark Mallon is in his fifth season at the helm for the Bears with a school and career record of 37-41-8. Last season, Mallon guided Cal to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1986. He is joined for the third year by assistant coach Lyle Yorks, a former All-American at the University of Virginia and goalkeepers coach Raffi Kardzair, who played at the University of San Francisco.
