BEARS STAY ON THE ROAD
After opening the 1997 season with three home games, the No. 12 (Soccer America) Bears made their first road trip of the season to Providence, R.I., for the Brown-adidas Foot Locker Invitational. The Bears went 2-0-0 on the trip with victories over Rhode Island and Brown to win the tournament and improve their record to 4-0-1 overall. Cal continues to play on the road as it faces No. 18 (Soccer News) Portland on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 2:15 p.m. in Portland, Ore. Cal lost to Portland, 3-0, in 1996, but the Bears lead the series, 4-2-1.

WEEK THREE HIGHLIGHTS
The Bears made their first road trip of the season last weekend and had an impressive outing to win the Brown-adidas Foot Locker Tournament Sept. 12-13. Cal jumped to a 5-0 first-half lead over No. 15-ranked Rhode Island in the opening round of the tournament. Cal's defense, led by tournament Defensive MVP sophomore Derrick Dyslin, held its opponent scoreless for the third time this season as it rolled to a 6-0 victory over the Rams. Sophomore John Macdonald paced the Bears with three goals and one assist. All of Macdonald's goals were unassisted, two coming off of breakaways while the third was on a penalty kick. Junior Matt Newmark and sophomores J.V. Ganal and Justin Bell had the other Bear goals, while sophomore goalkeeper Doug Brooks posted his third shutout on the year. In the final round of the tournament, Cal defeated the host Brown Bears, 1-0. Cal's lone goal of the game was scored by Bell at the 34-minute mark in the first half. Dyslin, Bell, Brooks and Macdonald were the four Bears named to the all-tournament team.

DYSLIN DEFENSIVE MVP
Sophomore Derrick Dyslin was named Defensive MVP at the Brown-adidas Foot Locker Tournament for his part in leading Cal's defense to two shutouts, a 6-0 victory over Rhode Island and a 1-0 defeat of Brown. Dyslin's defense has been phenomenal this season as Cal has held opponents to only 0.20 goals per game. A transfer to Cal from Richmond, Dyslin has started every game for the Bears as a marking back.

BEARS IN THE RANKINGS
The Bears started the preseason ranked No.12 by Soccer America, but moved up two notches to move into the 10th spot Sept. 1. Currently, the Bears are rated No. 12 by Soccer America and have received votes in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll.

ABOUT PORTLAND
