BEARS TRAVEL TO STANFORD INVITE: After opening Mountain Pacific Sports
Federation play at home with a 1-0 defeat of Sacramento State, Cal (5-1-1)
heads to the Stanford Invitational Oct. 3-5. The Bears will face Dartmouth
Friday, Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. and Harvard Sunday, Oct. 5 at 11 a.m. This year's
meetings will be the first time Cal has faced either team.

WEEK FIVE HIGHLIGHTS: The Bears opened conference play with a 1-0 victory
over Sac State Sunday. Freshman Kendall Simmonds had the hot foot for the
Bears as he recorded his first collegiate goal. Athough both teams were
held scoreless throughout the first half, Cal clearly dominated the play,
outshooting the Hornets, 23-12. At the 61-minute mark, Simmonds received a
cross from sophomore Tim Castillo and knocked in a five-yard, left-foot
shot for the Cal score. The Bear defense held Sac State scoreless mainly
due to the tough play of sophomores Derrick Dyslin and Chris Sawicki. With
his fifth shutout of the season, sophomore goalkeeper Doug Brooks continued
his bid for All-America status, collecting seven saves in the win. He has
34 saves to date.
DYSLIN DOMINATES: Derrick Dyslin, a sophomore transfer from Richmond, is
making an immediate impact as a Bear. Since his appearance in the
backfield, Cal is currently limiting its opposition to just 0.71 goals per
game and has rendered five opponents scoreless. A starter in all seven of
Cal's games, he has helped lead the team to a 5-1-1 overall record and a
No. 15 ranking by Soccer America.
MIGHTY BROOKS: Doug Brooks continues his pledge for All-America status
this season. The sophomore goaltender has played every minute for the Bears
and has only let five goals past him in seven games. He has 34 saves, five
shutouts and boasts a goals against average of just 0.68. Only in his
second season as the Bears netminder, Brooks already ranks tied for fifth
on the Cal list in career shutouts with 11. Last season, he finished in a
fourth-place tie (6) for single season shutouts. With his strong showing as
a Bear in just one and a half seasons so far, he looks to be Cal's all-time
leading goalkeeper before his career is over.
BEARS IN THE RANKINGS: The Bears opened up the 1997 campaign with a
preseason No. 12 ranking by Soccer America. With shutouts against Rhode
Island and Brown earlier in the year, Cal moved up its highest ranking, No.
9, in Soccer America's poll and received its first ranking of the year (No.
14) in the National Soccer Coaches Association poll. The Bears are
currently ranked No. 15 in Soccer America and No. 21 in the NSCAA. poll.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: Dartmouth is 3-1-1 overall, 1-0-0 in the Ivy League.
The Big Green is led by fourth-year head coach Fran O'Leary. All three of
the Big Green wins have been shutouts. Juniors Jonas Matzon and Bobby Meyer
are the leading scorers with five points apiece. Harvard, with fifth-year
head coach Steve Locker at the helm, is 2-1-2 overall, 1-1-1 in the Ivy
League. The Crimson is led by senior captain Will Kohler.
THE COACHES: Head coach Mark Mallon is in his fifth season at the helm for
the Bears with a school and career record of 36-40-8. Last season, Mallon
guided Cal to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1986. He is joined
for the third year by assistant coach Lyle Yorks, a former All-American at
the University of Virginia and goalkeepers coach Raffi Kardzair, who played
at the University of San Francisco.
THROW-INS: Junior John Beck will be out for the year with a broken tibia
... Cal is outshooting its opponents 163-87 ... the Bears are averaging
2.00 goals per game ... after holding opponents scoreless (except for an
"own" goal vs. Saint Mary's) for the first five games, Cal gave up four
goals to Portland in its first loss of '97 ... the team's leading scorer a
year ago, Adam Hunter has two goals and one assist to date ... 11 players
have scored one or more points for Cal.
