Cal Dominates Rhode Island, 6-0

The California men's soccer team dominated its first game of the Brown-adidas Foot Locker Tournament, defeating No. 15 Rhode Island by a score of 6-0. The Bears improved their record to 3-0-1 overall with the victory.

It was Cal sophomore John Macdonald's turn to shine as he completed his first collegiate hat trick. Macdonald had three of the six Cal goals and assisted on another in leading the Bears in the shutout. The speedster scored two of the three goals on breakaways, while his last goal was off of a penalty kick. The Bear offense was unstoppable, outshooting the Rams 20-7. Junior Matt Newmark and sophomores Justin Bell and J.V. Ganal netted Calis other three goals in the decisive victory.

Cal's defense remained steadfast, posting its third shutout of the season. Sophomores Tim Castillo, Derrick Dyslin and Chris Sawicki maintained a tight backfield, holding Rhode Island to just seven shots on goal and no corner kicks. Goalkeeper Doug Brooks collected three saves, while picking up the shutout.

The Bears will play the host team, Brown, Sunday at 12 noon ET in Providence, R.I. in the second and final round of the tournament.
