Men's Soccer Falls to Portland
PORTLAND, Ore. -- The No. 18 ranked Portland Pilots, fueled by a hat trick by junior midfielder Chris Brown, defeated No. 9 California, 4-1, Sunday on Merlo Field in Portland, Ore.
Portland (5-1-0) pulled away from a 1-0 halftime lead to score three goals in the second half. Brown, who also tagged Cal for three goals in the meeting last season in Berkeley, scored consecutive goals in a one-minute span, beginning with an 18-yard blast under Cal goalkeeper Doug Brooks in the 46th minute. His second tally was a six-yard diving header. His third and final goal came in the 70th minute, to give the Pilots the, 4-1, victory.
Cal (4-1-1) prevented the shutout when senior forward Adam Hunter scored in the 61st minute on a throw-in by senior midfielder Jason Young.
Prior to Sunday's game, the previously unbeaten Bears had surrendered only one goal in five games. Cal outshot Portland 19-11.
